Long Lasting Dog Houses

As the owner of a Labrador Retriever named Joe, who loves the outdoors and spends his nights in an outdoor dog house, I have tried purchase sturdy designs over the years in order to not have to replace it often. At UniqueDogHouses.net we do research into how finding a long lasting dog house can be accomplished. The following article should help.

For many it is difficult to determine the proper kind of dog house to get for their dog. The size of your dog is the first thing you will need to know. This will help you determine the right size for your particular furry friend. There are a few things you will need to consider when picking the ideal dog house for your dog.

For dog’s that spend all or most of their time outdoors you need to consider your local climate. If your home is in a place where the temperatures drop significantly you should investigate purchasing a dog house with heat. If that is out of your price range you definitely want to get one that is insulated and watertight and add in a heated dog bed. Buy a heated pad or bed designed for dogs since your dog can become overheated if you use one designed for humans. Heated dog beds are made to be chew proof and operated safely using low voltage.

To help repel fleas look for a dog bed made with cedar chip stuffing. If your local climate is more prone to heat than cold you need a dog house to help your dog stay cool. Look for one with plenty of ventilation and place it in an area of your yard where it will be in shade most of the day. There are air conditioned dog houses available for those dogs that easily overheat.

Purchase large dog houses that gives you dog ample room to lay down and turn around, but not so large that it is hard to heat. Bigger is not better in the dog house world. There is a wide array of materials used in the production of dog houses among the most popular are wood, plastic, PVC, and galvanized steel. You can buy a dog house pre-assembled or one that needs to be built.

Is Your Dog Safe In Your Car?

Dogs and Car Travel

Keeping pets safe is a priority at UniqueDogHouses.net, so read the next article for safety tips.

Unless you are lucky enough to live out in the countryside with lots of private grounds you will have to travel to get your dog to a space open enough to give it a good run. Of course if you are in walking distance of a dog friendly park you can simply pop on a lead and go, but for many dog owners living in a busy town centre or city, a daily car journey is a necessity.

It is important that your dog is safe and comfortable during any length of car journey. This is a list of car accessories for dogs

Dog Safety

Dog travel cages or cages specially adapted for cars not only makes your car journey safer for you but also for your dog, it also helps the dog feel more secure. Imagine how frightening it might be to your dog looking out the windows of a moving car!

It could be there is no room for a travel cage or that maybe your dog is taken out in more than one car, in which case a dog harness with seat belt adaptor is a good alternative. This is a highly recommended multi purpose accessory for your dog!

Word of warning: For those who think these are extreme, imagine what would happen if you were to have a car accident. Your frightened dog if unsecured will instinctively want to get out of the car and possibly run right onto a busy road.

Dog Comfort

A car boot isn't designed to be comfortable so if your pet has to travel in the boot dog beds are much nicer to sleep on.

It is also a good idea to keep a dog blanket in your car especially if you are planning a long journey in the colder months. (Keep a blanket for yourself too in case of break downs!)

Food and Water

Your dog will get hungry and thirsty during a long car journey and will certainly need to quench his or her thirst after a long run. It is essental to keep water handy and for the bowl, consider disposable or re-usable material travel bowls that fold up neatly instead of the standard bowls that are bulky and take up more space.

Handy hint: The car engine might need water too! Keep a supply of water in your car for both dog and car engine especially during the hotter months. Large plastic milk or juice bottles are ideal for this. If you are out in the country you can re-fill at a fresh water river or stream.

Shade from the sun

Drivers and human passengers have visors to protect them from the glare of the sun so don't forget your dog and fit a car window shade where appropriate.

Tip: If you also have children you may already have car window shades that are just as suitable for your pet!

Dog Ramps

A dog car ramp can be a godsend! You can lift smaller dogs into the car but what if you have had a particularly muddy run or if you have an older heavier dog that can't jump up? A number of dog ramps for cars are available that fold away neatly when not in use.

Pet First Aid

As exciting as running in the countryside can be for your dog, there can also hazards including barbed wire, broken glass and sharp sticks. The first aid you apply to your dog if it gets a nasty cut will be vital in its recovery and if you are out in the middle of nowhere it could be a while before you can get your dog to a vet. Pet travel first aid kits often come complete with gauzes, wipes and bandages and fit in most glove compartments.

Is A Dog Protecting Your House?

Dogs And Home Security

At UniqueDogHouses.net we realize that while dogs provide some security in the home, other measures should be taken to have a safe home.

These days, home security is simply a must have.  Burglaries and crime are always on the rise, which makes it all the more important to protect your home.  There are various burglary alarms and home surveillance systems available, designed to help you protect your home.  Although they are good in their own rights, nothing compares to an old fashioned guard dog.  Guard dogs have been used for generations ?to help people protect their homes and their belongings.

For many years, guard dogs have helped to scare off burglars and thieves.  Although most have gotten used to dogs now days, nothing fends off a thief more than a vicious dog grabbing his ankle and clamping down.  Almost all guard dogs have serious bites and can seriously injure a burglar.  Guard dogs are trained to protect one's home ?and they will do so no matter what.

When you get a guard dog, you should always make sure that you let him know who is safe to be around your home.  You don't want the dog to be vicious towards everyone, as friends and family are certainly allowed to be around your home.  Most guard dogs are left outside of the home, with some deciding to keep them indoors.  Indoor dogs are great, as they will instantly catch a burglar the second he decides to break into your home.

If you plan to keep your guard dog indoors, you should always have a supply of food and water available, as he will be there when you aren't.  You will also need to give him access to an outdoor area as well, so he can use the bathroom.  A fenced in yard is an ideal place for a guard dog to go outside, as he can come and go as he pleases.  Sometimes, a burglar will try and sneak around the back entrance ?which is where giving a guard dog outside access can come in handy.

Before buying the dog, you should always carefully research the species and where you plan to get your dog from.  Police dogs or dogs that have been trained for protection are ideal, as they already know how to defend things.Dobermans and Pit Bulls are great for protection too, simply because they are well known for being very vicious.

If you carefully research your options and get your guard dog from a reliable source, you shouldn't have much of anything to worry about. You should never get your dog from a lesser known or poor source, as the dog may be poorly trained or not in good health.  A guard dog can be a great addition to any home ?providing you get a dog in good health and more than capable to fend of burglars.

Basics of Dog Training

Dog Training

Though dog-human interaction goes back thousands of years, communication between the two is still sometimes rough. The human half of the pair is usually the smarter party, but watching the usual training sessions one can have legitimate reason to wonder.

Dogs understand and respond at roughly the mental level of a human two-year-old, but there the similarity ends. Their senses operate differently - their color vision has a different response pattern to reds and greens, for example, and obviously their noses are infinitely more sensitive - and their minds process information differently as well. Anyone training dogs has to take this into account in order to avoid human frustration and canine misbehavior.

Dogs are pack animals by nature. Descendant from wolves - where even the 'lone wolf' is an anomaly - they're social and function best with active interplay and within a strict hierarchy.

So, set aside half-an-hour per day, an hour would be better, for at least the first few months of training. Start training your dog as soon as possible. Puppy training sometimes can be started as early as four weeks old.

Elimination ('potty') training details we leave for elsewhere, but all training follows similar guidelines.

Establish your pack dominance early on. Dogs have a natural hiearchy- there are alpha dogs, beta dogs, and the bottom dog is the omega. For a sane household, and a well-adjusted dog, the human (whether male or female) must always be the alpha male of the pack.

Depending on the breed, this will be either more difficult or easier. Like humans, some are simply more assertive than others. Leashes, collars, commands and other training aids are all highly useful but most important is attitude. Never let your dog be the boss.

Physical force is not necessary to enforce your dominance. Sometimes, used appropriately, that will be necessary. Usually, simply being firm and willing to wait for compliance will be enough.

For many, placing them on their backs when young and placing a firm hand in the middle of the chest until they lower their paws - a sign of submission - will be enough. With some, reinforcing this by putting your face close to theirs, emulating dominant dog behavior, can help.

Keep the leash short to discourage your dog to run, and pay attention to you. Allow plenty of time for free running behavior, essential to dog health, but that's before or after training, not during. At least, not at first.

Start simply by choosing short, clear commands that sound distinctly different: sit, stay, down, come. Use a firm voice when addressing your dog. You're in charge, but not angry. Avoid double-word commands like 'sit down' or 'stay down'. This sounds too much alike and may confuse your dog. Like we say at Unique Dog Houses.net, if it confuses you it will confuse your dog.

Be consitent with each verbal command by using the same tone, look and hand gesture. Eventually these can separate, but at first it's essential to provide the simplest, most consistent form of communication.

Just like two-year old humans, dogs have limited capacity for grasping the subtleties of language. Assist their understanding by rigid consistency. Don't use a single command word to mean more than one thing. 'Down' can mean 'don't jump on me or anyone else', or it can mean 'get on your stomach', but it has to mean one thing only.

Be clear, be patient and be committed and the result will be a dog who trusts and listens to you. And that makes it worth the effort. Find more on dog training at Luvurdog.com/dogtraining

Stop Dogs from Digging

The two key reasons for a dog digging are that he is too hot or too cold. When your dog digs a hole and lies in it, his temperature can be self-regulated. Different from people, dogs have no way to add or remove layers so they have to get relief from weather conditions in other ways.

Boredom may be another reason for your dog digging. A dog that is apart from his master all day can easily become bored. Dogs will find ways to amuse themselves if they are left alone. Unfortunately, this may be digging!

They will need to be channeled in alternate directions in order to stop the digging behavior. Sometimes all you need to do is provide him with a safe digging area where there will be no repercussions. Particular breeds are given to digging. Extra patience will be needed with these breeds in order to stop dogs from digging.

For more information on how to stop your dog from digging, I recommend that you check out: Stop Dogs from Digging

The following tips should help to stop dogs from digging up your yard:

  1. Put an unpleasant "present" in the hole dug by your dog. Often dogs dig for a while, then leave the hole for a period of time, and return later to continue their digging activity. Once your dog has left the hole, you should place the "surprise" in the hole. One idea is a water spray mixed with bitter apple, which may be purchased from pet stores.

  2. Placing garden waste in the holes is one way to stop your dog from digging. Most dogs like to dig in clean dirt. Add dead leaves, sticks, rocks, and mulch to the hole and cover it with a thin layer of soil. It is probable that your dog will stop digging when he discovers the undesirable materials in his hole. If this doesn't work, fill the hole, spraying the contents with bitter apple. Most dogs dislike the odor and will stop digging in that particular hole.

  3. Give your dog his own spot where he is free to dig without fear of punishment. Digging is natural for dogs. It may take some time to train your dog to restrict his digging to that spot but it can be done. Stop dogs from digging in your flower garden by giving them an area where they are free to dig a few holes.

This could be a sandbox or you could cordon off an area that is not landscaped. If you bury a few dog treats that your dog can find, this will teach him that he is free to dig in that spot. If your dog has previously been chastized for his digging activities, he may require extra encouragement. Once he realizes that he is allowed to dig in that area, he will be a happy dog.

  4. As soon as your dog as his own digging patch, the excitement will need to be kept up for him. Every so often, you should bury a toy or treat for him to find. Dogs get bored with digging the same patch of land and may find another spot in your garden more exciting.

Occasionally, you should replace the dirt in your dog's digging area. Fresh dirt rather than hard earth is preferred by most dogs. Also, there will be occasions when your dog finds your flower beds more appealing than his designated digging spot. Spread animal essence, which hunters use to draw out animals, over your flower beds. Dogs may stop digging when they smell other animals.

This information will help you to stop your dog from digging anywhere you don't want him to. Dogs are not being mean when they dig under your fence as this is instinctive behavior for them.

Basic Puppy Training

Basic puppy training

One should never attempt to train a dog if they have no knowledge about basic puppy training.

There is a lot of information available on how to becomming a dog trainer. Too much available for that matter. Learn how to train a dog, before to attempt to train one.

Dogs by nature, love to please and love to be rewarded. This basic nature of a puppy makes dog training quite an easy task. The difficult part of dog training is the communication between man and beast.

Three fourth of the dog training battle is won if you can get the dog to understand your intentions, actions and commands

The cardinal rule in dog training is 'TRUST' 'RESPECT' and 'LOVE' and definitely NOT FEAR. You can never train a dog properly if he fears you. If a dog fears you, he will mistrust you.

Avoid striking the dog al all costs, whether it is with your bare hand or with an object like a leash, cane or anything.

Avoid loud repetitive and harsh scolding al all costs.

To convey your disapproval a single stern verbal NO is more than enough, anything else would be over doing it.

Be positive from the very start. Use rewards and praise instead. If the dog realizes that it will get no praise or reward if it does the wrong thing, it will soon try and remember the things HE SHOULD NOT DO

Rewards are a very important part of basic puppy training.

Remember that any praise or reward will reinforce correct behaviour. Hugging and petting or lovingly stroking the dog when it does the right thing is OK, BUT a reward with a small treat goes a longer way in reinforcing correct behaviour.

Food is the prime motivator with all animals, and the dog is no different.

Body language is the next best tool in good dog training. Learn to communicate with your body and not with words. Right from the very start try and establish body movements that mean YES and movements that mean NO. Establish a relationship with a verbal command and each particular movement of your hand or head.

Puppies are very alert, attentive and sensitive. Body language can go a long way and achieve just as good response as verbal commands.

Start by having a definte body action accompany each individual verbal command. Identify that particular verbal command with that particular body movement.

Once you are happy with the response to the verbal command, try only the body movement instead. This would establish in the dogs mind what that particular movement of your body means.

To succeed at dog training you must be persistent. You must persevere if you want results. Frustration can be an early experience, but do not give up.

Everything takes time. Do not expect results overnight. Do not have unrealistic time frames. Do not set a time timtable for results. Work at achieving results instead. Train yourself to be patient.

Never give up. Soldier on and be rewarded with a well trained and well behaved dog.

Your children have probably been begging "When can we get a puppy?” Owning a dog is a major responsibility which can be an excellent learning experience for children. Before you adopt a new dog, there are a number of things to be considered. You and your family will have to come up with a game plan in advance and agree to what your new furry family member can and cannot do in your home.

One of the first things you want to consider is dog or puppy-proofing your home.  A great way to do this is to bend down and look for perils like dangling electrical cords that would be perfect for chewing; find toys and other small objects off the floor that could be harmful if swallowed; remove chemicals, paper sacks, plastic items and even plants away from the prying jaws of a dog. Also, until your new puppy is house trained, you should temporarily remove rugs. He shouldn't feel that this is the perfect spot to eliminate!

If you are looking for an excellent guide to potty train your new puppy, visit Potty Training A Puppy.

You should buy a baby gate to restrict your dog's access to those areas of your home where you don't want him to go. This might also be used to separate off an area just for him. This is particularly helpful when it comes to housetraining. As well, puppies are particularly curious and like to explore. To prevent your dog from chewing your shoes and clothes, make sure that he can't access them. Your closet or bedroom doors should be closed.

Getting some rawhide bones and chew toys will help to distract your dog from gnawing your possessions. While your puppy is teething, make sure he has safe toys to chew on so he won't be tempted to chew on objects around your home. In addition, make sure he has several toys to keep him busy. A bored dog can be a destructive dog! Rubber balls, tug ropes, push dog toys, and even squeaker toys are favorites of many canines. As with human children, you should give your dog toys that are appropriate for his age. In addition, you buy plenty of toys so they can be rotated to prevent boredom in your dog.

Lay some ground rules in advance of bringing your puppy home. Can he jump onto the furniture? Will he be allowed in your bedroom? Have you decided where he will sleep? You should know that earlier so his dog bed can be set up there. Are you flexible enough to change your plans as needed? Sometimes, dogs will pick a favorite spot in the home and if it is your bedroom, you will either have to train him to sleep elsewhere, or permit him to sleep on his dog bed in there. Just like people, dogs have their own individual personalities. You will need to be adaptable.

You will also need to have a strategy for dog obedience training. An obedient dog is a great family member.  In addition, you will get so much more out of the doggie-human relationship if you invest in dog obedience training. Do your research and decide if you can tackle the job yourself or if you want to find a training school to help.

Secrets to Dog Training is the best online dog training guide. To check it out visit, Secrets to Dog Training Review.

You also need to plan for the times when you are away from the home? What about a vet? Would you employ a dog sitter or have him boarded in a kennel if you needed to travel? Do you have a decent yard for him to roam in? How about exercise? Do you intend to walk your dog so he can socialize with other dogs? These are all essential considerations that must be thought about before you adopt a dog.

Nearly all of the puppies owned by Americans make their home indoors. Dogs kept inside with your family and you need to be housebroken. The process of potty training a puppy is a prospect that intimidates many dog owners. It is not that difficult, it doesn't have to be messy and housebreaking can be accomplished without a struggle. Training needs to receive a significant amount of time devoted to it in order for it to be successful. It requires time, involvement, and some tools of the trade such as puppy training pads.

The Puppy is Boss

Two guiding rules exist for helping puppies and dog owners in puppy training. First and most importantly, don't punish your pup for something you did not catch him do! Two, always remember to praise your puppy for good behavior. Don't fall into the trap of only responding with 'no' when you see your pet doing something you don't want them to do. Let them know through praises and rewards when they do something right.

Housebreaking/House Training your Puppy

Many methods exist for housebreaking your puppy. At the beginning, encourage the puppy to "go" on newspapers or puppy training pads. These pads are treated with chemicals that make puppies want to use them to do their business. When you notice them doing their pre-potty routine of sniffing and walking around, take them gently, without saying a word, to the puppy training pads or newspaper and praise them for going to the bathroom correctly.

When the new dog is comfortable with the papers or puppy training pads, they can then be put near the door or even outside. The change is made from concentrating on bathroom habits at a location inside the house to a location outside the house. You'll soon see that you won't need the training pads or papers in the house anymore.

The drawback of this approach to housebreaking is that more time is required to get the pup to do his business inside. Some other popular techniques used for house training your puppy are puppy crate training or using cages which require constant looking after by the owner.

When using a cage or crate to housebreak your puppy, realize that puppies can't go for more than about seven to eight hours without using the bathroom. This method usually works as most dogs treat cages and crates as their sleeping places and they do no want to soil their beds because they will be forced to lie in the mess. Leaving them in their cage or crate for very long, however, is not good to do.

The use of crates/cages and papers/puppy pads is not required if you have constant supervision. In this case, the owners elect to be with their puppies for as much time as necessary. This works good for those who are retired, work from home, or any owner that can spend lots of time with the puppy. Pet owners can normally usher their dog outside as soon as the pre-potty signs are noticed with this technique. A constant watch must be kept on puppies to make sure that there are no accidents or slip-ups.

To sum up, puppy housebreaking and training should be treated as part of the 'come' and 'stay' command trainings. But puppy potty triaining and housebreaking will be the most difficult forms of dog training due to the fact that they are simply the messiest. Do not lose heart!

At UniqueDogHouses.net your dogs health and welfare is important. One of the problems I have had with many of my dogs is bad - what have you been chewing - breath. Incredible as it may sound; your dogs are also at risk of having bad breath and the causes of bad dog breath are very similar.

Information On Curing Bad Breath In Pets

Q: Clifford, my 4-year old, 160-pound St. Bernard, has breath so bad that when we invite people over, he has to go out in the yard. His breath smells like rotten meat. I've changed his food and flavors of toothpaste. I've added lemon to his water. Fleas

Fleas are among one of the most well known and hated pests in the modern world. Like mice, rats and other pests, fleas can be carriers of disease and live from the blood of their victims. Their bites are painful, causing a red mark that can swell, itch and persist for two weeks. Fleas can attack humans, cats, dogs and birds, making them versatile predators that do not distinguish between their prey.

Once an infestation has occurred in your work or home, fleas can be very difficult to remove. As with many other pests, it is much easier to defend against an infestation than to rectify one once it has begun. You may need to resort to highly toxic chemicals, such as those found in flea foggers, to remove the pests once they have begun to breed.

If you are faced with fleas, knowing how they breed can help you fight their infestation. Like many species, fleas require humidity to breed. If you cut the amount of humidity in the air within your home, the number of larvae that survive to become full fleas is drastically cut. This can be done by purchasing a dehumidifier and letting the air in your home become dry. I know this may be unpleasant for some, repeating this for several weeks will greatly decrease the number of fleas in your home.

While you are dehumidifying your home, you can vacuum up a great many fleas. By vacuuming all of the rooms in your home and immediately disposing of the vacuum bags, you can also greatly reduce the number of fleas.

Using your pets as living flea killers is another option. Medications such as Advantage and Front Line are designed to kill the fleas that your pet is exposed to. This allows you to prevent your pets from being bothered while reducing the number of fleas that can breed.

All of these things can be used together to help combat the problem of fleas. However, you should be careful with the use of chemicals and natural flea products. Both the chemicals and natural problems can be toxic to pets and children. When you begin using these, you need to make certain that you take the time to protect your family against he products you use. Inform your family If you set repellent wards around your home, and place them where your pets cannot access them.

If you take the proper precautions, you will be able to make your life a lot more comfortable, as well as protect your family and pets from diseases and discomfort.
