Fleas

Fleas are among one of the most well known and hated pests in the modern world. Like mice, rats and other pests, fleas can be carriers of disease and live from the blood of their victims. Their bites are painful, causing a red mark that can swell, itch and persist for two weeks. Fleas can attack humans, cats, dogs and birds, making them versatile predators that do not distinguish between their prey.

Once an infestation has occurred in your work or home, fleas can be very difficult to remove. As with many other pests, it is much easier to defend against an infestation than to rectify one once it has begun. You may need to resort to highly toxic chemicals, such as those found in flea foggers, to remove the pests once they have begun to breed.

If you are faced with fleas, knowing how they breed can help you fight their infestation. Like many species, fleas require humidity to breed. If you cut the amount of humidity in the air within your home, the number of larvae that survive to become full fleas is drastically cut. This can be done by purchasing a dehumidifier and letting the air in your home become dry. I know this may be unpleasant for some, repeating this for several weeks will greatly decrease the number of fleas in your home.

While you are dehumidifying your home, you can vacuum up a great many fleas. By vacuuming all of the rooms in your home and immediately disposing of the vacuum bags, you can also greatly reduce the number of fleas.

Using your pets as living flea killers is another option. Medications such as Advantage and Front Line are designed to kill the fleas that your pet is exposed to. This allows you to prevent your pets from being bothered while reducing the number of fleas that can breed.

All of these things can be used together to help combat the problem of fleas. However, you should be careful with the use of chemicals and natural flea products. Both the chemicals and natural problems can be toxic to pets and children. When you begin using these, you need to make certain that you take the time to protect your family against he products you use. Inform your family If you set repellent wards around your home, and place them where your pets cannot access them.

If you take the proper precautions, you will be able to make your life a lot more comfortable, as well as protect your family and pets from diseases and discomfort.

Buying strong dog bathtubs

Every dog owner needs a place where they can bathe their dog. People who regularly take their dog to the professional groomer may need to clean up a pouch who has rolled in the dirt too many times. Often folks like to have a special dog bathtub that is only used for their dog instead of using the family tub. There are many great advantages to having a dog wash tub. When you bathe your dog at home you can have a lot in grooming costs. Having a dog bathtub also means that your dog won’t be putting scratches in your tub and leaving a ring of dirt when you are done.

You need to order a dog bathtub that is the correct size for your dog. You will need to measure your dog’s length and height to get a tub which is a good fit for the size of your dog. Select dog bathtubs which includes a collar restraint device which can be used to keep your dog in place while you are bathing him. There are many different types of dog bathtubs. After you determine the proper size you can them take a look at features.

Features you definitely want to consider include a drainage system, a hand held nozzle for easy washing, and flow and temperature control. You might also want to look at portable dog bathtubs which give you the option of placing them wherever you need them. You will probably have a nervous dog the first few times you give him a bath in his new tub.

The more you use it the quicker your dog will become comfortable. Make sure not to use sudden movements when bathing your dog. It is a good idea to start with the head and work your way down to the tail area. Do not spray water in your dog’s ears or face when you are rinsing him. Dry the dog as much as possible before you remove the collar restraint system.

Anti-tick Products, Are They Safe?

Recently I've had people ask me why I am promoting the Frontline and Advantix, etc. anti-tick products when I don't use them on my own dogs. Well, there are a couple of reasons.

First, my dogs don't seem to need them. We check our dogs every day for ticks, and only occasionally find one burrowed into the dog's skin; when we do, we just pull it out.  Our dogs are very involved in our family life and we are always touching their coats, so we can easily find anything that shouldn't be there.  I am also lucky because all of our dogs have short hair. It is obviously easier to spot and/or feel a tick when you don't have to sift through a thick coat. Finally, and in my experience the most important reason, is that we are not afraid to take the ticks off the dogs.  As a groomer, I've found that  75 percent of people are afraid to yank a tick out of their dog, cat, child, whatever.  For this reason alone, many people use tick medicine. (As a side note, I am going to make some instructional videos on nail clipping,etc... and one of these videos will be "how to take a tick off.")
My reluctance to use chemicals on animals is this: If I am supposed to put gloves on before I apply it to my pet, why is it OK to be applied to my pet's skin, where it is absorbed into his/her body..( It works by its active ingredient, fipronil. Fipronil is absorbed through your pet's skin and into its oil glands. This allows Frontline to be released to your pet's hair follicles and skin every time the oil glands are activated.)   Just on principle this does not sound safe to me, so, since I don't have to use it, I don't.

That said, I totally understand why some people do use the tick products.  If your dog is going out and getting 20 ticks a day and depositing some in your house, on your kids , and in your bed, your dog needs something to deter the ticks. The last thing you want is a tick infestation.  Also, obviously, it is not good for the dog and the humans to be exposed to ticks and the diseases that they can carry. Lyme disease can be transmitted to humans and dogs, as can Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehrlichiosis, and Basesiosis.  The results of having these diseases can be quite devastating, so ticks are not pests to be taken lightly.

I guess it is up to each pet owner to balance the benefits and the risks of using preventive tick/flea chemicals.

Obviously, no two dogs are going to be just alike, even those of the same breed. In the same way, there is no single best orthopedic dog bed that is best for every dog. Not only do you want to consider price when making your selection, but you’ve also got to keep the well-being of your faithful pooch in mind. If you’ve ever had to spend a night sleeping on a mattress that was way too soft, too lumpy, or in which the support had broken down, you have some idea what it’s like for your dog if he doesn’t have the right kind of dog bed to sleep on. When choosing the bed that will best fit his needs and your own, here are some things to keep in mind.

How To Choose The Right Size Dog Bed?

Just as dogs come in every shape and size, you’ll find dog beds to fit all breeds. Some tiny beds are no bigger than a doormat, and the largest ones you can find are as large as a human mattress. All dogs need beds that give them the room to stretch out and move around while they sleep. To decide what size dog bed best fits your pet, measure them from head to tail while they are in the lying position. Then you’ll know exactly the size of orthopedic dog bed that will be most comfortable for him.

When we talk about the best orthopedic dog beds, we mean beds for dogs that look like smaller versions of human mattresses. When you lift one, however, you’ll find that they are constructed to be much lighter and easier to transport if needed. When you go out to buy a bed, lift the different models to make sure that you’ll be able to move your pup’s bed in order to clean around it.

The Best Filling Materials

The same materials that give human mattresses their orthopedic properties are also being used to make beds for dogs. Memory foam is a relatively new material that keeps its shape for long periods of time without getting bunchy and lumpy like old-fashioned dog mattress materials did. Orthopedic dog beds usually have a type of coiled fiberfill inside them, but metal springs such as are found in many human mattresses are never used when making dog beds.

Dog Bed Coverings

In order to make your new orthopedic dog bed more durable so that it can withstand the use your dog is going to give it, the covering material used is more like what is used on patio furniture than it is like what covers your mattress. Usually the dog bed cover will be made of a durable polyester that holds up well and will clean easily. An important feature to look for when choosing an orthopedic dog bed is to select one with a removable cover so that you’ll be able to remove it and toss it in the washer when it needs cleaning.

Dog show is one of the most fascinating show in the dog-lover countries, such as USA and UK. From the dog show competition, the proprietor of a dog which becomes the champion of the show will not simply get much money but also honor and prestige. Related to the cisrcumstence, usually the fans of dog will do their best in order to get the top breed of their dog in order to participate and become the winner of the show. This circumstence, in reality will also develop the willingness of the dog breeder to mix the breeds of dog to get much better dog breeds. Thus, the show and also the breeding immediatley could reduce the extraordinary breeds of dog from extinction.

The Standards for the Breeds

The dog show champ is determined by the judges who are knowledgeable enough about the breeds of the dog competing for in the show. There are some standards which require to be met in order to be the champion of the show. The most principal and most original standard for the breeds is it has to be best fixed to the closest standard based on the conformation list used by the judges.

The Judges of the Dog Show

The judges are people who are incredibly professional about the breed of dog they are judging. Favoritism and even bribery are also believed to exist in the competitions. The dogs compete in various dog shows to gathers points and get the title of champion. Every time a extraordinary dog wins a dog show the dog is rewarded points that go towards winning a championship title. The number of points that a dog collected is determined by the level of the dog show that it was opting as the champion, the number of dogs that were in the show and whether the dog show was considered to be a major competition or a minor one.

It can be sum up that the more superior the point, the bigger the dog's chance to be the winner of the dog show contest. However, each country will also have its own winning standard or instructions. Thus, to be the victor the dog has to meet all the standards chosen by the country. So far, being a champ is not the most significant thing since from the dog show we can still learn much to obtain much more eminent knowledge, increase our relationship to the others and we can also meet many people from many backgrounds of life.

So, do you desire to get more than fun? Find anything about dog show secret here, join the competition and let your dog compete!

training your puppy

Before you start any dog or puppy training program, you need to focus on what you want to achieve, as against the patterns you're trying to eliminate. So when you're going through your training routines, think clearly of how you want your dog to react, and picture it having already happened. Keep your mind away from the negative behavior you're trying to avoid.

If you're not sure what you want, how are you going to get it? That's true of most things in life, particularly when it comes to dog house training also

It's human nature to think about things that we don't want to happen to us. This is particularly relevant with regards to training dogs as well. We don't want our dog to pee in the house, and absolutely not to chew the furniture, or ignore us when we tell him what to do, or bark like maniacs when we have guests or visitors come to stay.

But consider this for a second. Especially if you're thinking of getting a new puppy in the home. Do you really want to spend the next ten, twelve, or fifteen years chasing your dog telling him off for things you didn't want him to do? Don't you think it's a better idea to coach your dog to be obedient and socially acceptable?

A prime example springs to mind is when we think, "The dog had better not chew my shoes, or furniture," try, "I will encourage him to play with his toys." Rather than, "I don't want my dog to jump up on my guests," how about, "I would like my dog to sit to greet people."

By framing your training goals in positive terms, you'll have a clear destination in mind. That's a great way to start your training journey.

Let Him Know When He's Been Good

Probably the best thing that has happened in housetraining puppy in the past few years is a move in focus from highlighting corrective action, or penalizing mistakes, to rewarding obedience and favorable actions.

The practice of rewarding your dog's good behavior is a smart one, especially for potty train puppies. A fundamental reason for using rewards is that if you make a mistake using punishment, the outcome are likely to be quite disheartening for your pet. Punishment can make a dog feel threatened when she may react to being punished by becoming aggressive or fearful. Some dogs, especially timid breeds, may close off completely. They lose their sparkle. Some may even appear completely broken spirited.

The good thing about reward based training is that it also makes you feel good as the trainer. It's nice to be a source of praise and treats, instead of a constant disciplinarian.

And best of all, reward-based training really works. Primarily because rewards training techniques build strong relationships which are key to good behavior. As soon as she discovers that rewards come for a particular action of behavior, your dog will associate one with the other and learn to repeat the behavior when called upon. With regular practice of the best way to use this technique, this technique will have your dog behaving like the perfect gentleman (or lady).

Is your dog elderly and finding it difficult to get comfortable when it lies down? He has always been quite happy sleeping on an old blanket in the hall, or next to your bed, or just outside the bedroom door. Recently, however, he has been continuouslsy moving around and finding it dificult to settle down. An orthopaedic dog bed could make his life a whole lot more comfortable.

Dogs generally don't complain, and will sleep on pretty much anything. They will often curl up on old sweaters (perhaps even your favourite new one) or on old newspapers, however, as dogs get older, just like us, arthritis can begin to get hold, it is time to consider a more comfortable bed for them as their back and legs begin to ache. This is where orthopaedic dog beds come in.

Orthopaedic dog beds are usually made from memory foam, some are crumbled and some have whole memory foam, theu also generally have a waterproof lining of some sort. If your dog has a bad bladder or drools a lot, this can be very useful. Always check with your vetinary surgeon if you have any concerns over your dogs health, and especially if he shows any signs of having back, leg or any other joint pain.

It is not only elderly dogs who appreciate orthopaedic dog beds; dogs who have recently had surgery will recover much faster if given a comfortable orthopaedic bed to lie on. Orthopaedic dog beds can aid recovery of joint sores where those have developed, and prevent development of them.

The orthopaedic dog bed can be placed in the position that your dog usually sleeps on his current blanket, and will be much more comfortable on a properly designed bed. But always try to keep him out of drafts. Give him an orthopaedic dog bed and see the difference it makes.

How to teach your dog 'down'

The 'down' command is a staple of training a dog, and is a must. My article here will show you the basics of the 'down' command, and adopts technique from 'Secrets to Dog Training', the best selling dog training program you can get.

If your serious about getting your dog trained amazingly well, in the shortest and easiest way, then the 'Secrets to Dog Training' ebook by professional dog handler Daniel Stephens is a must have. You wont find another way to train that has so many benefits.

Check out 'Secrets to Dog Training' at this page now

'Down Dog!'

This lesson is best taught outside, in a open area your dog trusts, free from ALL distractions. An empty park, your back yard, or a unclutterd room is ideal.

Start by calling your dog to attention with a favourite treat (cut up chicken, sausage or bologna). The idea is to get the dog to be positioned standing in front of you.. Hold a reward in front of him, then move it slowly down to the ground in front of him, but far away to know he cant have it. Restrain the dog if you need to. Use your chosen down command (voice and hand motion) and repeat it until he lays down.

After he lies down, let him have his treat by moving it to him, as he is lying down.

Dont let him get the treat, until the dog can complete the wole command. Never reward your dog for a half done job. If the dog appears reluctant, try and coax him onto his back to get him down and reward him. Keep this up, you want to keep going until the dog learns that he is rewarded when he lies right down. It wont take long if he is mildly hungry!

When your dog lays down with confidence, hold up the treat off the ground and out in front of him, so he can see it well. What we want to achieve is the dog lying down, anticipating the treat!

This will confuse the dog at first but keep motioning him with hand guidance, but only reward with the treat when he is fully down.

After practise of this, start giving the 'down' command (hand motion and voice instruction) before you present the treat to lead the dog down.

Now gradually try to wean your dog of wanting the reward. You can get him to respond to a down sweep of the hand, and a 'down' command. Hold the reward further and further away from him, and reduce the praise each time as you give it to him. Get him to accept your happiness as reward for following the voice and hand commands.

Choosing A Small Dog – Terriers

For many people, the decision to buy a small dog is influenced by the fact that they only have a small backyard, or live in a condo. Yet while lap dogs are very popular these days, there are also those that prefer the temperament of larger dogs. For the latter group, who like the temperament of larger dogs but cannot get one, small terrier dogs are an ideal pet. Small terrier dogs were bred down from regular terriers, so they retain the temperament of their ancestors. They are not at all submissive like a lap dog.

Small terriers are, in fact, quite the opposite of submissive. You'll find them confident, outgoing, willful, and fearless. Because of this they need an owner who knows how to be 'top-dog', so they always know their place in the 'pack'. Don't get a small terrier if you can't be firm and assertive when it's necessary. And you can't allow a situation to develop, even when you're playing, when your terrier gets to win, even for a moment. Most terriers will challenge their owner at some point anyway, even if you do keep the structure of the pack. But if you don't, you set up some potentially disruptive behaviour in your terrier.

Terriers are fantastic dogs. They're affectionate and happy. If they're socialized properly the household cat should be okay, although to a terrier, other cats will always be seen as prey. This is because terriers have a high prey drive, so if you have small kids and you have or want a terrier, they should always be supervised when together.

You can see the many small breed terriers below

  •  Welsh Terrier
  •  Irish Terrier
  •  Scottish Terrier
  •  Smooth Fox Terrier
  •  Border Terrier
  •  Cairn Terrier
  •  West Highland White Terrier
  •  Norwich Terrier and Norfolk Terrier
  •  Yorkshire Terrier
  •  Australian Terrier
  •  Toy Manchester Terrier
  •  Manchester Terrier
  •  Miniature Bull Terrier
  •  Sealyham Terrier
     Kerry Blue Terrier
  •  Boston Terrier
  •  Dandie Dinmont Terrier

Though terriers share the common characteristics described, the various breeds have their own unique traits. And the differences extend beyond how they look, to their personality Some breeds do need more grooming compared to others, even within the terrier group. That might also be something to think about when choosing a dog.
